Festivals of China

The Chinese are known throughout the world for their inventions. Apart from silk, paper making printing, gunpowder and the compass are the four great inventions of the Chinese in ancient times. Pottery and porcelain are other great inventions of China. Chinese porcelain is not only useful but is also beautiful. It is admired for its highly ornamental shapes and colous.

The kite is one of the most popular inventions of ancient China. The Chinese make a great variety of kites. Some well-known kites of China are Dragon kite, Phoenix kite, Eagle kite, etc. In China, the best season for kite flying is spring. During the Pure Brightness Festival in April, people pay respect to their ancestors and then go out and fly kites. Flying kites is one of the most popular forms of recreation in China.

China, being one of the oldest civilizations, has a number of festivals. Spring Festival is the oldest and the most important festival. Starting on the Chinese New Year Day, it lasts for 15 days. People have a family dinner on New year’s Eve. On the New Year Day, they paste couplets over their doors and set off fire crackers. On the 5^th day, is the Lantern Festival. People decorate their houses with beautiful, coloured paper lanterns. During the festivities, the Chinese fly kites and hold kite-flying competitions.

Today China is changing. The Chinese are giving up their old ways of life. A modern Chinese wears western clothes and lives in western style apartments. There skyscrapers, restaurants and modern highways in China.
